How many square meters are covered by my trap?

Our mosquito traps without CO2 cover between 50 -100m2.
Our traps with CO2 cover a much larger area; between 400 - 600m2. Placing traps close to breeding sites and in wind protected places will increase the working of the trap.

Can my trap be in the rain?

Although all our mosquito traps are weather proof, we recommend a location free of heavy rain fall. Rain will not damage your trap, but (heavy) rain can turn your dead mosquitoes inside the catch bag into a sludge which might influence the performance of the suction fan.

When will the trap start to catch mosquitoes?

After you installed the trap it might take up to 48 hours before you see the first results.
Our traps are made from plastic which might have a repellent effect on mosquitoes in the beginning. Also our artificial human scent will start to become active after about 48 hours. Before trap operations the artificial human scent can be taken out of the packaging and put outside for 48 hours. It can then be inserted into the trap when trap operations are supposed to start.

What is the best time of the year to operate my mosquito trap?

In Southeast Asia any time of the year is a good time to start operating your trap as mosquitoes are around all year long. Especially during and after the rainy seasons our traps should be operational as this is the time of the year that there are plenty mosquito breeding places around. The earlier you catch mosquitoes, the less new eggs can be deposited. Read about the life cycle of Aedes mosquitoes.

What is the best position for my traps?

Our mosquito traps work best when:
- They are close to breeding sites
- They are out of windy areas
- They are in shady places
- They are amongst vegetation
- the entrance of the trap is not blocked by low hanging vegetation
- They are set up in moist areas

Can the trap be used inside my house?

Although our traps were designed as outdoor traps, the traps that are operated without CO2 can be used inside. Traps that are used together with CO2 should be outside the house or can sometimes be used in semi-open areas like reception areas.

What maintenance does the trap need?

Your pest control operator will know exactly how to maintain your trap.
In case your trap has become very dirty with splashed mud or fallen leaves, just wipe the trap with a moist cloth and clean the white top part with water and a (soft) brush. NEVER use cleaning detergents as they will influence the scent of the trap and therefore will decrease your catch rates!

How many mosquitoes can my trap hold?

The catch bag inside your trap can not hold much more than 80.000 mosquitoes. If you see mosquitoes sitting on the funnel net (= the small bag you see when looking into the trap) that most likely means that the catch bag is full and can not hold more mosquitoes. At this stage the catch bag needs to be changed. Normally your bag will be changed by your pest control operator every 2-3 weeks.

How many mosquitoes can I expect in my trap?

A lot depends on the placement of the trap, weather circumstances and mosquito population densities. Mosquitoes will not be active during the rains and your catches will be low. Mosquitoes will also be less active during times with strong winds. Low catch rates don't mean that the trap is not working, it might just mean that there are few(er) mosquitoes in the vicinity of the trap. Aedes mosquitoes (see 'dangerous mosquitoes') don't occur in clouds and a catch bag with 50 Aedes is worth more than a bag with 5000 Culex mosquitoes, who are less prone to transmit diseases.

How dangerous is my trap for children and pets?

Biogents mosquito traps are insecticide and pesticide free and are therefore safe when children and pets are around. After the sachet with the artificial human scent has expired, it can be safely disposed off by adding it to your normal household waste.

Is there a warranty on the traps?

Biogenst mosquito traps have a standard warranty of one year under normal operating circumstances.

Should I buy or rent a mosquito trap?

You can contact your pest control company about buying and renting options. Both options can include a service contract from your pest control operator to ensure your trap is working at its optimum. We know from experience that using a pest control company ensures a higher trap efficiency over time.

Does my trap really need added CO2?

CO2, which we humans breath out, is a very important attractant for all kinds of mosquitoes. You can operate your trap without CO2 but the catch results will be lower. Mosquito traps without CO2 are mainly used to attract mosquitoes of the Aedes species or those traps are used in areas where it is difficult to buy CO2.

What is the difference between the BG-Mosquitaires and the BG-Bowl?

All our mosquito traps work according to the 'counter-flow principle' (air in and air out of the traps). So from a technical point of view there is no difference between the traps. Our BG-Mosquitaire traps are more sturdy and durable than the BG-Bowl and they are a bit more silent. Another difference is that the BG-Bowl comes without a catch bag and the mosquitoes drop directly into the bowl. For some the bG-Bowl might be more attractive due to a more modern design, especially when the Bowl is used indoors without CO2.

Is there a difference between the BG-Sweetscent and the BG-Lure?

No.
The only difference is the time the attractants are active. The BG-Sweetscent works for 8 weeks and the BG-Lure works for 5 months after opening. Both attractants have a shelf life of 1,5 year. When the attractants go over the expiry date the performance of your trap will be severely affected.

Where can I buy the traps?

Private persons and companies can not buy mosquito traps directly from Biogents SEA. Please see the page 'where to buy' to find one of our agents. Pest control operators, research projects and governmental organisations who like to start selling/using our traps can contact us directly via the contact form on the home page.

How can my company become a Biogents agent?

Pest Control Companies that would like to become a Biogent agent can fill in the contact form. Some of our requirements are:
- Adopting a greener policy by slowly replacing fumigation with our eco-friendly mosquito traps
- The company should be registered locally as a Pest Control Company
- The company should include Biogents products on their website

Is there scientific proof about the effectiveness of your traps?

With so many mosquito traps on the market and so many mosquito products that actually don't work, we can imagine you would like to have some proof of the quality and effectiveness of our traps. Buckle up, because we have a long list with scientific articles for you!

What else can I do to prevent mosquito problems?

Remove as much standing water from your surroundings. Empty plant basins, buckets and any object that can hold water. Remove old tires and clean up the (plastic) waste from around your house; a bottle cap is enough for an Aedes mosquito to lay her eggs in. Sleep under a mosquito net.
